OFFERING: A journey through love and loss
The choir will perform the expressive Requiem Mass in C Minor by Luigi Cherubini accompanied by a 26-piece orchestra. Beethoven, in his high regard of Cherubini as the greatest of his contemporaries, requested this Requiem Mass for his own funeral service.
The gorgeous Nänie, composed in 1881 by Johannes Brahms, in memory of a friend, offers a timeless lament on beauty and loss. The text of Friedrich Schiller compares the inability of even the Greek gods to save their loved ones from the inevitability of death.
The romantic Liebeslieder Waltzes by Johannes Brahms is a wide-ranging exploration of the topic of love in its various guises. The music ranges from playful to passionate, raging to gentle, and does so in a style that is both heightened and accessible. All this while sounding folkloric, and with a hint of the Hungarian music that Brahms was so taken by. The choir will perform the recent English-language translation of the waltzes to better share their intriguing stories.
